If it leeking coolant on to the ground i would say its just a welsh plug. Couple $, head gasket kit $180 and a weekend she back on the road.

I would keep it

Hey Beefy,
I for one dont believe its a cracked head. The one you let me have didnt have a cracked head either. it did have a leaky welsh plug. i havent finished putting this one back together yet~ its way too hot here to be working on it. I did replace 2 welsh plugs, they are in the side of the heads between the heads, they have to come off to get at them. being slack, i have only done those that could be got at (#1 & one side of #2) , no new gaskets. It needed a valve to be spun. When it started it ran as smooth as a well oiled sewing machine. its not that bigger job to pull the heads. if you are careful you will be able to reuse the old head gasket. I dont run pressure in the radiator.
Give me a call if you want to talk it through with me.

Can definitely see it leaking between the block and the head. Is the welsh plug your talking about on the under side of the head? I guess I'm just expecting the worst knowing how bad the rest of the cooling system is. I will pull the head during the week and check it out. What's the go with the head gaskets, is there a seperate gasket for each head or one common one for the lot? Also read about a thicker gasket, what's the go with that? And while I'm asking where is the best place to buy the parts? I've had a quick look through the diesel parts thread but still not sure where to purchase

As it would be leeking between the heads it could just look like it's coming from the gasket.
Jump on eBay.com.au and type in jeep VM head gasket. There is a store called Shirley or something like that.

There is a couple links in the diesel parts section thre is a guy in Lithuania called arcoPistons
I brought one on a Friday it was at my door Monday

They use a single head gasket for all the heads.

Thanks mate. Found old Shirley. Did you get the kit that included bolts or did you source them locally? About $300 to my door with bolts by the look of it, which is a lot better than I was expecting. To be honest if I can walk away for that plus if I get the heads professionally cleaned I would actually be a lot happier knowing the cooling system is in better shape.
