Fuel smell inside car
I thought this would be useful for anyone with a 4.0L Jeep/AMC engine.
I have previously had the following causes of fuel smells inside the car:
1. Overfilling the tank
2. Fuel pressure regulator in engine bay leaking (due to age)
3. Fuel filter in front of fuel tank leaking (due to age). This can be easily identified with a distinct petrol smell near the rear passenger side door and petrol spotting on the ground.
[I understand there could be other sources anywhere along fuel lines etc].
Lately, there have been vapours coming inside and I know it was not from any exhaust leak [new exhaust and new rubber seal in tailgate] or any of the above reasons.
The culprit this time was a cracked rubber sleeve connected to the air inlet fitting at the top of the engine (the one in the front) which holds in place the breather tube going back into the airbox.
I also discovered that the breather tube wasn't even connected to the airbox [second and most obvious reason for the vapour leak]. Fuel and vapours were spluttering out. Problem solved.
