Strange noise under steering column
I hope that someone has encountered this weird sound before.
I have a Grand Cherokee Overland MY13.
Recently I have had the weirdest and totally random noise (i.e. not when I’m starting the car or from any particular driving action) it appears to be coming from just under the dashboard at the base of the steering column.
The closest I can compare the sound to (yes I’m not kidding) is like a gradual low to high noise like a cow mooing.
Got me completely stumped.
Yes I expect smart arse answers, but I can’t think of anything else that closely describes the sound.

Mate it sounds like the noise I had just before the AC shit itself , I have GC WK2 Limited, CRD, had it repaired and a few weeks later that noise again and then the AC shits again, this time leaks around the condenser.

I've had the same strange growling noise you describe, seems to come from deep behind the dash. Happened 2 or 3 times in the last 4 months for around 3 secs each time, it's quite loud and has only happened when the a/c is on, but not every time it's on. I've put it down to something related to the a/c, although that still functions as it should. I prefer fresh air to a/c, so unless it's very humid I leave it off. I also don't use it when towing. It has me curious but haven't done anything about it - yet.

I have the same issue in my 2012 GC 3.0 , really would like to know what it is but suspect it is an aircon issue .Has been going on for about 18 months on and off , never happens when its in for a service , of course .

I had the same thing with my 2012 crd when i had it, it started of as a low grumble then got more high pitched until it stopped. I likened it to someone squeezing out a fart. It gradually got worse and finally did it when one of the techs from the dealership was driving it and i was in the passenger seat, straight away he said it was the air con. evaporator and that it was a full day job as the whole dash had to come out. Luckily mine was still under warranty so it was booked in and the noise never returned. He never really said what the issue was with the evaporator just that it would need to be changed out.

Like some of you guys I just had the condenser for the aircon replaced a couple of weeks ago.
Today the local Jeep guy took it for run with me and couldn't believe the noise, initially thought it may be the brake diaphragm but then so no as it was way too loud, with a high pitch at the end.
I will pass on all your comments which should help.
Thanks again everyone.
Spoondog I love your comparison to squeezing out a fart, classic!
Cheers
