Default Where is the bloody tension adjuster bolt for the serpentine belt?

G'day fellas,

new member here. This is probably going to sound really dumb, so please stick with me. I've had my XJ for about 1 year now. She's a 94 model Sport. Its my first 4wd also.

A few weeks back i went to take some visitors for a bit of an offroad drive. Lucky we were only 10 min from town when it happened, but one of the bearings on the idler pulleys collapsed.

Anyway I got her home pulled the old belt off and the stuffed pulley. I ordered new ones from ebay. Now I stupidly threw the belt and pulley away, as I just assumed all XJ's ran the same system.

I'm trying to put the serpentine belt back on, and have been reading the factory workshop manuals from 93, 97 and 2000. In each one they refer to adjusting the belt tension using either a bolt on the alternator or the power steering. I have neither. In fact, i think i have an auto adjusting belt tensioner. I'm sure of it, as it looks just like the things that come up on Google when I search 'Cherokee belt tensioner'!

My question is this - how do i get the belt on? I have no instructions from the manuals that have this tensioner, I've looked on Youtube, and I've even done a bit of a search on here and I'm at a loss. I've tried pushing and pulling on the tensioner itself and it doesn't budge.

Any tips would be a HUGE help

1) look inside the bonnet or on top of radiator surround for belt diagram sticker

there are at least 2 different belt sizes for 4.0

are you sure the tension isnt adjusted by alt (or PS)...how are you supposed to remove them?..what happens if you loosen bolts and lever?

if something is a tensioner, it must have at least facility for mechanical or hydraulic movement

You dont show your location so no one knows if you have some variant for some other part of the world.
On a diesel XJ, The tensioner works a bit like a clock spring in that it rotates to tension. To hold it loose you use a 1/2" drive socket handle & put the 1/2" drive in the square hole in the tensioner & turn it against the spring. Dont know if the same applies to yours.

Yep just like layback40 said, I have also used a small ratchet strap from the tensioner arm down to the diff in a pinch

Very hard to hold without a big breaker bar. And difficult with the thermofan in. Be mindful lol.

Ok here's the belt diagram

Here's what I'm looking at from the front of the car.

The belt diagram almost matches that for RHD cars with AC, except that my alternator and idler are swapped around (the manual has the alternator as the top pulley, where mine is the lower one on the LHS)

No adjustment i can see there on the alternator.

Which way to i need to turn the tensioner (clockwise or anti) to loosen it?

Anyone know what size belt i need for this setup. I've got one here but I'm sure its going to be the wrong size

Turn it clockwise, like the diagram suggests
