Default Dana 35 traclok rebuild?

Hey all, contemplating rebuilding my traclok LSD in my Dana 35. Clutches are cheap and my diff is in great health other than the LSD not working great. My old stuffed diff had a good traclok and it was very capable off road. This one's not the same...

Any recommendations if I should do it? Money is an issue, otherwise I'd go a truetrac Detroit straight away. But clutches are $80 and I have lots of time... Just trying to figure out what the best course of action is for me..

I'd agree rebuild the LSD, I personally don't like auto lockers, selectable lockers are fine.
You'd be amazed at what a working LSD and good set of open tread pattern tyres can get through.

I do not think it is very difficult, or need special tools.

possibly budget for 2 x carrier bearings, my rebuilder told me they are ALWAYS worn on high mileage D35s

you will be able to see if visible wear on the outer races

99% you could get them off-the-shelf from a bearing supplier

I got ones for a Salisbury (D44 equivalant) and they were ~$35 each

Cheers guys! Can I do it without removing the carrier, IE sliding the pinion gears out and then the carrier gears out of the carrier with the clutches, replacing them and then reinserting them? My new d35 is quiet as. So much so I think it's had a rebuild some stage of its life.

it is possible to do on the ground, you have to take the axles out, and carrier bearing caps, then pry out the carrier gear case, then dismantle it.

The manual shows to use a diff spreader. You may not need one

You will need a shell-type bearing puller tool to get the case/carrier bearings off though (~$35 ebay)

It isnt much fun, check youtube, I wouldnt be in a big rush

Hmmmmm okay so the carrier needs to come out..... a bit detterred now. If i was to order the shims and stuff in the same order the backlash and preload would remain the same correct?

If you put it back with just new lsd clutches then the shims and preload remain the same, if you change the carrier bearings then this can affect the shimming due to production tolerances on the new bearings compared to the old.
Don't be scared by the job it is pretty straight forward and correct carrier shimming can be determined by the amount of backlash, so some testing equipment like a DTI is required.
