Removing the carrier from a d35 is a piece of cake, just make sure to put the shims back in the same place that they came from, they're like 5-6mm thick, they're not the supper thin shims, they are easily broken though so use care (not force) when refitting the carrier into the housing...

there are LOTS of Youtubes on rebuilding D35...hours of fun viewing
shim clearances should be ok, and not need resetting even if you do carrier bearings,(afaic bearings should have manafacturing tolerance <.001,) and if they are worn, new ones should actually restore correct tolerance
imo, its a really good idea to measure all freeplays and even blue BEFORE dismantle, measuring and checking everything is what is needed to avoid problem down track
