Default Recommendation for a Melbourne Mechanic

Hi all!

I've got a 99 XJ, and have got some issue with my front diff (lot of bearing noise).

Have looked at getting the diff rebuilt, but seems to be in the range of about $1800 up.

Managed to find a pair of new/old axles for sale on eBay, and have acquired them. They are Stock Xj axles, but are 4.11 ratio, where my existing axles are 3.55 so i'm going to have to change over both front and rear axles.

Whilst i'll try most things once, i'd need to buy too much gear for it to be worth me attempting this, so i'm looking for a recommendation for a good mechanic who can do it, in South East Melbourne.

Anybody got any good recommendations?

I'd be going the rebuild personally... then you'd at least get a warranty. To replace both front and rear complete axles would cost the same, if not more than $1800, as there's a shit tonne more work involved and if they broke driving out of the workshop you'd be stuffed as you've only paid for labour. Also allow extra $ for parts that might be worn (bushes/bearings/anything) from the donor units, as a decent mechanic won't install worn parts.
I use Total Traction Drivelines in Moorabbin for any diff issues i have. Not cheap, always busy, but Matt knows his stuff.
If you want cheap you usually lose out on quality, IMHO.
Good luck with whatever option you chose
