Never heard of dead ECM. I wonder why to make such swap.

cant comment directly on the Diesel ECM, but with the '95-'97 4.0 models, ECM failure is reported.
apparently the causes are; solder pins inside need re-soldering, poor connection to computer via harness, blown capacitor, (often caused by a short-circuit in the torque converter solenoid.)
On these models, the computer has a part number on a white label, which will be P50641..in small figures, then separately in much bigger numbers "252" or "287" etc. This is visible without removing the plastic cover..but hard to see
so an early '96 petrol auto is part num P50641252, later P50641287
check Rock Auto, or Parts Manual
these computers can be swapped, but I also do not know about post anti-theft vehicles..doubtful
