Default Generators and tech gear

I have a bog standard Gen Set and was wondering if I plug a laptop to it thru a computer power board, the ones that are supposed to save everything when lightning strikes and stuff would that be okay, instead of going for an Inverter job.

They reckon it should be pure sine wave. I have used a modified square wave 12v inverter without an issues on my laptop. Should be similar to using a non-inverter geni.

Laptop power supplies are fairly bullet proof and will accept the varying voltages from the worst of gens. The inverter vs sine wave vs modified sine wave stuff is for idealists when it comes to the laptop power supply as it is switched mode system anyway.
Plug in and enjoy .. but remember when it runs out of fuel and dies anything can come out the socket!
I have 2 gens, a 5.5Kw and a small 1.5Kw and they both run electronics (tv, amp, laptop, etc) without any probs but I do avoid inverters .. and I have had them too.

I usually run it via an inverter plugged into the battery with the battery either charging from panels or genny but the inverters chew so much power, they seem to be rather ineffiecent.
During the big floods I had the power board ,that my computer and stuff runs off, it was plugged into the genny to run the laptop and Plasma TV, didn't seem to cause any problems but a mate reckons I could have fried my TV and laptop. I didn't think so.
Thought I would get the good oil here on AJOR.

Been running tv and laptop, satellite modem, router, dvd and set top box on gens and no problems... inverters I don't trust tho.
Most of the gens have a 12v output (Note this is 12v and not 13.8 as in the vehicle - so battery charging is never going to be 100% from this source but OK to run other 12v gear ... and possibly the power inverter.

They are inefficient. How much I don't know but I bet JJ would know. I imagine that the higher the load the worse they would be also.

Extremely Inefficient actually ... if you can run on 12v.. do it!
The more you draw from 240v, the more the required 12v current goes up.
Try www.jaycar.com.au there will be examples there.
