Diff noise

A friend of mine has a petrol KJ with a noisy diff. After a recent service where his mechanic involved a diff specialist and to cut a long story short they changed the oil which has reduced the noise but advised him to get rid of the car as it would soon cost him $3000.00 to fix.

Is the diff a model specific problem and is the advice re costing correct.

We need to have more details on the year/model etc. and what sort of rear Diff...standard or with Trac Loc which is a form of locked diff with a bad reputation although my Trac Loc works well provided I use Dino oil with the Mopar Additive added for the Trac Loc added.

I would personally try to find a used diff from a Scrapyard, clean it and refill it with the correct oil than pay a huge amount to repair the existing one.

My rear diff on my 2002 Export 2.5 CRD is a Trac Loc 4.10...gave me some noises when doing tight turns on tarmac which disappeared once I replaced the oil with the correct Mopar Friction Modifier additive added.

So more details please of year/model!
