You have 2 TDC 's in the 4 stroke cycle. The correct one is when #4 tappet is rocking on intake/exhaust as you move the crank back and forth. ie as #4 piston moves up on the exhaust stroke there is a point when it reaches near the top, exhaust valve closes and the intake begins to open. This is the point #1 piston is TDC on its firing stroke and you need to set the distributor accordingly. Hope this helps.
It doesn't really matter if the distributor is fitted incorrectly, just make sure at TDC the rotor is pointing to #1 spark lead and in a clockwise direction #2 lead goes to cylinder #3, #3 lead to cylinder #4, #4 lead to cylinder #2. ie 1 3 4 2 firing order.
