Default 2.5 distributor install

Just finished installing a new 2.5 crate motor (ATK) in my '93 YJ. Having issues installing a new distributor. I have 100% confirmed TDC, set the oil pump slot just past 3 o'clock (or 9 o'clock depending on which side you choose to read... same thing). Install the dist and the rotor ends up pointing just past 3 o'clock rather than six o'clock as described in the shop manual. Further reading says this is where it should be if it is a 1995 model. I believe the '95 uses a different distributor, correct? Is there any way to tell exactly what year this new motor is from the engine stamping just below the head, and above the #4 cylinder?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have 2 TDC 's in the 4 stroke cycle. The correct one is when #4 tappet is rocking on intake/exhaust as you move the crank back and forth. ie as #4 piston moves up on the exhaust stroke there is a point when it reaches near the top, exhaust valve closes and the intake begins to open. This is the point #1 piston is TDC on its firing stroke and you need to set the distributor accordingly. Hope this helps.
It doesn't really matter if the distributor is fitted incorrectly, just make sure at TDC the rotor is pointing to #1 spark lead and in a clockwise direction #2 lead goes to cylinder #3, #3 lead to cylinder #4, #4 lead to cylinder #2. ie 1 3 4 2 firing order.
