Cruise control is automatically disabled too - and it's handy on the highway.
This could be a simple way to isolate the fault then. My dash lights came on & the ABS/ESP/Traction control stopped working and it turned out to be a bad ABS pump/module. Thing is, the cruise control kept working, so I guess using this deduction you can try to put it into cruise & if it won't work then suspect a wheel sensor, but if it does still go into cruise then look for something else.

Try hosing out around the hubs / inside the wheels, it happens to mine a lot and is normaly just mud around one of the speed sensors, a quick hose off normaly fixes it,

This is a fortunate thread as I was going to ask the same question. My ABS/ESP light came on yesterday on the way back from the high country. I'd got the left hand wheels caught in a rut that dragged a heap of mud inside my front left wheel the day before. The light didn't come on until I was well and truely on the black top, so I suspected the wheel sensor. I drove home from Mansfield most of the way on the cruise control. When I got home I removed all the wheels and hit the whole underneath with the Karcher. The lights are still on today. My Scanguage is not showing any codes. When I think about it I recall thinking that the ABS was coming on at strange times in the dirt the two days before the light. It was activating with very little brake pressure but not in every case. I also noticed that the ESP wasn't activating when it normally did when slipping a bit in the dirt.

Mine both came on together out of the blue - the ABS one tells you the ABS is disabled, which in turn disables the ESP so the ESP light comes on. Came on and off over the next few hours then went away for a few weeks til fixed.

Mine was an intermittant fault in the steering position sensor

Well, ran some tests on both side wheel sensors. LHS was not responding, jiggled it around a little, LHS now working.

Very weird! It's a Jeep Thing!

My sensors were disabled by mud build up and two had to be replaced. I was told that I should take the calipers off to get rid of the mud build up as hosing won't do the job

ABS and ESP lights came on as with TassieMav.
