Yes, I have seen 4 off 5 speed transmission failures in GCJ CRD mentioned on forums, Jeep56 for one, all seem to be towing full time and heavy vans 3 tonne plus. The same gearbox is in the SRT's I think and there doesn't seem to be failures in those so it must have something to do with the constant load and driving habits

It will be interesting to see if the auto specialists that make heavier valve bodies etc for Toyota's etc start offering something for these 5 speeds although the numbers are not that high

Was there any failures in the WH CRD as that's the same gearbox with a little less power in the engine?

I think that even with the warranty expired you could have a good chance of FCA having to pay because of these previous failures and if your k's are under 100,000

My wife's honda HRV has a CVT gearbox and they fail anywhere from 80,000 to a maximum of 125,000. Not if or but, they will fail, all of them and not only Honda's, all of them and bad luck about warranty there was face to save. Maybe the latest batch will be better

Hi All,
I have had the 5 speed my11 and now a my15 8 speed auto. I have to say that there is no real discernable difference with them in regards to smoothness (if there is such a word). There is a bit of a fuel saving in the ltrs per hundred. I did about 150,000km on the 5speed with about 60,000 towing a 3.3t caravan. I never had an issue with the transmission. I have only done about 8,000km in the 8speed with about 1000km towing the same caravan and same weight. The only real difference is the power is better, the coolant temp is a bit hotter towing. I would have no hesitation in using both the 5 or 8 speed for towing. The only reason i upgraded was for wanting a diesel for towing, if it was not for this then i would have kept the old car. It was great and very reliable. Gooodluck with your decison. If you would like to know more, please PM me.

The 5 speed is the same transmission in the WJ and WG as well as the WH. There is no logical reason for it to fail more often in the WK2, but more sold means more to fail overall. As has been pointed out the failures on the other forum are all by people who tow very large vans for long periods.

We towed our 3.5T van on the Big Lap last year, about 25,000 of the total 30,000kms with van behind. We treated our transmission / vehicle with respect and didn't thrash the living day lights out of it. It's fine still....

Got passed by plenty flogging their vehicles, all makes and models!
