The Hemi for me would be the only option on a used car. If you look at what is available for sale, there are far more CRDs than Hemi because over time, your diesel engine bay maintenance costs will outstrip any fuel savings. Even though the CRD is a great engine, Hemi owners are hanging on to their Jeeps for a reason.

Totally agree (since I went for a hemi too.), but I recon there's logical arguments either way, depending on the specifics.
CRD probably has the edge for someone towing full-time.
But otherwise they're too close to call IMO, might-as-well just come down to preference.

It's great if everything's in good shape, correct oil viscosity (0W-20 or 5W-20 in good condition.), etc. Sounds like you might've had something going-on, for me I've had partially blocked PCV and slow EGR valve increase consumption without getting any errors.

There's smarts around when MDS activates and for how long, so it can seem like it's working normally. But if something isn't quite right (especially anything that affects the oil and crankcase pressure readings, like incorrect viscosity, bad sensor, blocked PCV, etc.) it will activate less frequently and for shorter cycles.

I will dispute that eksjay. If you look at the classifieds the V8's for sale most have lower Km then the CRD's, why I ask myself? Not driven much? $$$

I service my own CRD and if you spend more then $200 on oil and filters you are doing it wrong. I do mine every 7,000km (set the service interval at 5,000km but by the time I get around to it its about 7 )
Glow plugs if needed around $100 a set

Both the Hemi and CRD have there own issues, Hemi drops a valve seat and CRD's do the swirl motor.
Hemi fix - pull the head
CRD fix - pull the manifold (or a 20c resistor from Jaycar )

I believe 80% of WH/XH's sold here in Au were diesels so that why you see more of them for sale.

Clarky, I much agree about more CRDs being sold in this market given the need for long distance towing duties and fuel economy.

Before buying my JKU, I was in the market for a used 5.7 L Commander but got frustrated with the lack of availability. One of the reasons for wanting this over the CRD is that the petrol engined cars would have been less likely used for long distance towing.

If anyone can service their own vehicles when out of warranty, they will save a lot of money. I wish I had your skills.

Most people would have parted with their GCs and Commanders because there are few alternatives for parts and service to the Stealers, unless you find a good mechanic.

Crd servicing is easy as. Oil and filter are extremely accessible. Only things I have had sorted by a pro was the starter motor. Utter prick of a location, and the bushings on the control arm and front diff. Otherwise there is loads of room for arms and fingers provided the right tools are used. Jeep and the average mechanic will happily charge 800-1000 for an oil change and check up. Or 1500 in port hedland. That was when I started doing it all myself.
