If they have a StarScan they can do just about everything that a dealer mechanic can do. Starscan is the computer that works with a bunch of vehicles..
Yes....... even basic hand held DIY tools can do that.
Mechanics are very likely to have professional scan tools that can do far more. The really advanced features are rarely needed or used.
Starscan is the factory tool that as you would expect can pretty much do anything...... but the chances of a stealer mechanic understanding its features is pretty much zero.
In practice all you need is a basic code reader for 99% of problems.

I bought a Bluedriver a while ago, as it picked up not only the MIL lights but all the other codes as well. Usefull tool, but one of the more expensive ones and it will only talk to it's own app. Can't use Torque or the like to display data from it.
So far it has found the bad front wheel speed sensor, a bad injector, intermittent EGR valve, (cleaned & currently working again), & now told me about the problem cat converter.
