Sorry, I disagree. The 'sticky' on oil coolers says not to go over 116*c or you'll ruin your tranny.

Agree that 105 is not hot. Our 2000 XJ always runs on 100. The only time our temp ever went over 100 on the west coast is when we did a long climb and then pulled up for a squiz at a view. Numbkins here had a brain fade and switched the engine off straight away instead of leaving it running. When I started it back up 5 minutes later the temp was up to 107. Went back down to 100 within 3 minutes.

If your temp is stable without a trailer it should do the same with a trailer.

I never worry about locking out overdrive, highway towing in 4th is fine, the auto looks after everything.

Have fun, they are a great tow vehicle.

Ok My wrong.
I looked up dexron specs amd I was a little shocked. I thought Dexron could handle a bit more heat than it can.
I do know that if you hold a vehicle HEAVILY on the torque convertor, the oil temps skyrocket quickly. I've heard rock crawlers with autos' can have oil leaving the TC at 200 degrees. Dexron 111 should be around 70 degrees for a long transmission life. Anything over 100 degrees will start to shorten the tranny's life.
So when towing or offroad, make sure you keep those temps under 100.
I think a bigger trans oil cooler in an XJ is a must.

Me too,

... based on various tranny oil temp charts ... and the factory spec 50'-80' operating range in the FSM.

Obviously the gearbox will survive at higher temps ... and many have over the years ... through neglect and abuse ... but its not ideal in the long term.
