Default Update - pre-update front window swap

Some time ago I saw a pre-update Xj for sale that had update front winows fitted to it which got me thinking about doing this swap, whilst I am a big fan of the pre-updates (no surprises there) the one thing that irritates me is the quarter glass, it is restrictive for outdoor access like going through a drive through and the divider causes a blind spot on both mirrors.

So with that in mind I decided to look for a suitably priced pair of doors to be the donor of parts for this swap to see how difficult that this could be, thanks Dukling...

Currently I have the full Limited interior fitted and my wife likes the woodgrain so the pre-update trims will be staying (unless the update Limiteds have woodgrain as well, maybe someone can fill me in on this), so my doors look like this....

The doors I purchased are off a 2000 model Classic and look like this...

And in the nude...

After looking at the inside skin I found only one hole that is in the same location on both a pre-update door and an update door (second hole for the top front edge below the mirror near the top hinge) so using a pair of pre-update doors I kept especially for this mod I started a quick perusal to see if there would be anny issues for the locations of any mounting points for the update components...

Approximate positions marked and circled...

This pic shows the reference hole that is common between the models as well as the two spot weld postitions that hold the front track to the door...

Positions for the motor and the lower mount for the main track..

Positions for the upper mount for the main track...

As the bolts are mounted in a recess I am going to see if I can make a press that will allow a recess to be created in the right spots, more lathe time.....

I am in two minds as to whether to use the update mirrors or not, on the plus side they pull in which could be useful offroad or in carparks etc but the shape is wrong so I will have to see what they look like when fitted....

Any constructive thoughts and comments welcomed...

Until next time....JJ

Haha too right windex, I love your idea JJ
Can't wait to see how it goes.
Just a question (not to be a thread jack) why do we like pre update models more?

You should note for there would be a small amount of flexibility with the mount for the motor, might make things a little easier when it comes to mounting it up

Think that is the prob. I have an idea that the door hinge support bracket is different. JJ will be able to confirm.
