best way to remove left sided exhaust manifold bolts on V8 WG?

Specifically, a broken left rear upper stud that holds the heat shield. Apparently it is a common reason for the exhaust leak.

Actually, both upper and lower studs are broken. Ouch.

So how do we approach this task on RHD Grands?

Actually, it was rather easy. As long as you are lucky enough to have a bit of the bolt residual to grab onto with the he wise grips, the remaining bit comes out very easy. In fact, I removed most of it with the fingers.

first thing would be to remove the heat shield , grab a 10mm flex head ratchet spanner and a 1/4 drive socket (a flex head ratchet in the drive as well), I did mine , the broken bolt should come out easy , replace it with another I have plenty around here if you really need one , but im sure rockauto has them , but if it really pisses you off use a stud , and two nuts and make the hole bigger in the heat plate. my 2002 wg had that and yes I did that job as well.

Yeah. I ordered a couple of studs from the dealer. Gotta be made of gold or something.

My heat shield came out slightly damaged. I mean nothing that the hummer wouldn't cure, but rear lower hole is now gone so if replaced back, it would have to be mounted via 3 points only. I am curious how badly the heat shield really needs to be there. Any one have been driving around without one for a while?
