Quite true. The D Vice opens up to 8".
How much would an average 8" vice cost, plus hitch mount that you have to fabricate? Would it bulky or less bulky? Would it have other features than just grip, such as slip-not surface and pipe jaws...
eBay
Other "special features" include a bottle opener!

The D-Vise was designed to open far enough to repair u-joints on the trail. Also, to be used for repairs such as welding. Can be pinned in place upright or sideways to accommodate different materials. New 'Slip-Not' surfaced jaws, and a separate set of pipe-jaws beneath. Another key feature: the vise can be slightly tightened down in the receiver and the hitch pin cannot be removed without a socket or wrench. Last, but not least, we've included a bottle opener. It seemed like the right thing to do. |
Anyway, I'm doing this as the wife and I might do some solo trips around the country, so we want to be prepared for self rescue.
It would be ideal for banging out brackets, straightening and bending pipes, grinding, welding, etc..
