Checked the Mac's site & their Aus/NZ distributor is based in NZ.

Good stuff. Never thought of that, I almost always get my stuff direct from USA as Aust/NZ distributors are usually more expensive, plus customer service there is so much better. Crappy exchange rate sucks bigtime.

Anyway, I'm still tossing whether or not I should get one from the states and bring it back as part of my baggage allowance. Will be handy around the house too.

Wouldn't be hard to make one. Vices aren't that expensive. The idea has been around for ages so it's not like you are copying.

Quite true. The D Vice opens up to 8".

How much would an average 8" vice cost, plus hitch mount that you have to fabricate? Would it bulky or less bulky? Would it have other features than just grip, such as slip-not surface and pipe jaws...

Other "special features" include a bottle opener!

The D-Vise was designed to open far enough to repair u-joints on the trail. Also, to be used for repairs such as welding. Can be pinned in place upright or sideways to accommodate different materials. New 'Slip-Not' surfaced jaws, and a separate set of pipe-jaws beneath. Another key feature: the vise can be slightly tightened down in the receiver and the hitch pin cannot be removed without a socket or wrench. Last, but not least, we've included a bottle opener. It seemed like the right thing to do.

Anyway, I'm doing this as the wife and I might do some solo trips around the country, so we want to be prepared for self rescue.

It would be ideal for banging out brackets, straightening and bending pipes, grinding, welding, etc..
