Default CJ7: Mooka Build

Hey guys,

Thought i would start throwing all my build info in to a thread.

So when i brought her home i replaced the oil, Takes 5.6 liters to fill her up. Oil filter replaced, Takes a Ryco Z30. New fuel filter, Ryco Z14.

The starter was not working, Unbolted it and hooked it up to a battery with a set of jumper leads which seemed to free her up, Plugged her back in.

Had some problems with no spark, Could have been the coil... Could have been the ingition module... Could have been the dissy... Solved it all at once with a HEI dissy

Wired up a make shift button/switch ingition using this diagram.

And it looked like this:

After this i was trying to get her running, We worked out our timing was WAY off, We used the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine and jamming our thumb down the #1 plug hole we found top dead center by lining it up at 0 on the harmonic balancer.
Shot some fuel down the carby and off she went.. For a few seconds. She shot a bunch of crap out of the thermostat housing.. Nice big hole.. Pulled her off and found this:

YUMMY!
Off to Wooders we went! New housing, New gasket and some new tube for her!

Worked out we weren't getting any fuel from the tank to the pump by hooking up a squirt bottle of fuel to the other side and watching it pump it through, This way we knew it wasn't the pump causing the problem.

Our next task was to remove the fuel tank, Soaked the bolts in WD40 at the front and back, jacked her up, removed the rear tyres and got to work.

To remove those 4 or so bolts on the rear crossmember that for some reason are nuts and bolts i got my rattle gun and a screwdriver and slowly turned the rattle gun whilst keeping pressure between the bolt and the crossmember which kept pressure on the head preventing it from spinning, This works VERY well and takes all of 5 minutes to do.
The other lot we just used a ring spanner and the rattle gun.

After lowering the tank we found out we couldn't disconect it from the steel lines as we couldnt rotate the clips and they point up... So we just cut machined clamps off the tank end and will replace them with hose clamps.
After we got her out we found this on our tank:

A nice little crack, Im contacting a company nearby who can hopefully plastic weld it for me as i REALLY don't want to replace the whole tank.

We gave her a bit of a wash and watched a fair bit of shit come out of her, Let her sit out for a day and that little crack closed up a fair bit.
The company i was going to use is closed at the moment so for now the cars up on jack stands with no tyres or fuel tank! However we are still getting stuck in to her!

Had a crack at bogging... Can't say im any good at it and dad is just as bad!
This is what we ended up with:

Not to crash hot eh? It didn't have enough hardener so that created a little bit of a problem.. But we are sorting that section out today when i find enough motivation to go back outside and sweat some more!

After dad did that section i had a crack with the normal bog on a little spot.

It came up looking pretty good if you ask me!

You can also see the mess dad made down the bottom there.. Im thinking of banning him from going near the bog....
Anyway mum came out yesterday to fix it! She stripped down an EH to bare metal when she was younger and did a LOT of bog work.
Well she fixed her up and now she looks like this!

Weve done a few other things, Taken wheels off to polish the rims, given the bullbar a polish.. painted the rear hubs and checked the brakes... Cleaned the rollbar cover...

We are making a fair bit of progress on her! Ordered a rebuild kit from Procarbs on eBay yesterday and it arrived today So might rebuild the carb tonight depending on how tired i am.

All the expensive stuff is coming up soon, New panels... Floorpan replacement... Reupholstering the seats...

Im thinking of spraying the whole back with deadener, Has anyone tried this?

I will keep you all updated and i hope you are enjoying my build! If you have any questions about anything i've done and you want more detail about how i did it i will happily oblige!!

Haha, It is pretty mad, even had my Mrs out there the other night helping out!!!

No way my brothers helping though, He was getting his license around the time dad originally inquired about it, so his really got the shits now that Ive got it :P

Just to offer an update!

Got home from work about an hour ago and dad had just finished rebuilding the carby, We've got her happily idling at 1k RPM (For some reason my tacho is working and not wired up to the tacho terminal on the dissy....?) starts easy when warm even without the choke flap, Worried our thermostat isn't working, probably the muppet at supercheap giving us the wrong one... She gets pretty hot pretty quick.. Might have something to do with the amount of water pissing out of the radiator...
Almost out of things we can actually do on it i think... Next stop is getting the floor pans replaced... as well as the other rust we've found behind the passenger guard... Currently trying to chase down a tripple core radiator for her. Just going to have to see how we go! Will keep everyone posted!

Go Mum~!!

When I was a teenager, I got me mum into the whole restoration/modification thing. She had an absolute ball. Even when I set her on fire with the welder.

Lookin good so far man.. keep up the good work..

I think I heard somewhere that HQ holden radiators fit with minimal trouble.I reckon thats whats in mine , they are a little shorter but also wider & the bolt holes just need to be drilled. Some one might be able to shed more light.
