Default Disable (or reverse) Start/Stop

Hi Gang

Someone made the comment that start/stop isn't the best thing for diesels. It drives me crazy anyway so always turn them off in any car I'm in.

Has anyone had a crack at either disabling theirs or at least reversing the switch so you turn it on f you need it, (rather than off if you don't).

Cheers

unplug or bridge the bonnet switch. the system will not shut off/turn on if it senses the bonnet is open.
No one "needs it on" its a gimmick to pass emissions at the cost of increased engine damage, start motor and battery..

Wait till you see the mobile starter motor and battery businesses flood the market in a few years time

I'm assuming you have ample evidence to support your engine damage assertion.

Cars/SUVs with this feature have uprated battery and starter to cater for stop/start cycles.

Just 15+ years in engine building..
over 70% of engine damage is from dry starting where no oil pressure is present.
Which is the case in every stop start you do. If there was an oil accumulator system in the car I would say other wise, however I am yet to see a factory engine with this system.

I agree with MidnightMods on this one. Taxi engines tend to have a long life as they do a lot of continual running hours which means the temps & oil pressures remain fairly constant over a longer period which = less engine wear.
Imagine towing a caravan or boat in traffic. Having a hot engine start/stopping all the time = heat soak on turbo's, crank bearings etc & no oil flowing to continually dissipate the heat.

My wife had a VW Golf until recently and the start/stop defaulted back to 'on' every time the engine was turned off. Designed not to be turned off permanently.
I'd hate it in the GC, apart from the continual wear and tear it would be a nightmare when towing the 'van in traffic.

Same in the KL - defaults to on every time you start the car. But it’s become a habit to press the button to disable as I’m reaching to the gear shift to move out of park. Not sure why people are so aggrieved by pressing a button. I get the wear and tear argument - whether true or not remains to be seen, but has no impact on take off when towing - the thing restarts before your foot is even off the brake pedal. In fact, just reducing pressure on the brake pedal (without taking your foot off the pedal) will fire up the engine - which is useful when anticipating a quick launch at a tricky intersection. Like anything, you learn how it works and how to use it. Definitely very low on the list of “things that are annoying about owning a Jeep”!
