Big problem with the filter plates is they use the filter housing mounting point to bolt onto, the housing is alloy, plate needs removing to do filters and the threads can get dicey after awhile, same filter/pump on my Colorado ... Been going to make one up for this one so it doesn't use the housing mount points... a hole for the water drain is needed to be added as well.......... one day I will do one, 5mm alloy plate so its more of a skid job, something hits and slides, most I have seen have a flat front vertical surface that won't deflect or bounce an object but take the full force of the hit, something that won't do much good on that housing... just my obs from creek goollies underneath various puddle jumpers.
PS: always handy to have the filter cap off an old filter in the spares box in case you chew the hex head on one, to remove it when it happens means destroying the cap so a spare is handy, they just pull off the filter also some brands is just the filter to cap................ don't ask.

Yes i had noted that...but I figure it is a whole lot better than nothing given how the hex nuts on the filters are quite exposed. There is already a "skid" at the front of the filter housing to deflect a little as well.
The bolts are fairly short so aren't much to remove...though I have a rattle gun in the car which makes removal pretty quick anyway...as well as filter replacement being every 10,000 kms for me it won't be a job too often.
Filters are due for a change in a couple of days so I'll keep one of the hex nuts as you suggest Drover...

Mine get done every 10K so thats around every 3 months usually, you don't want a rattle gun anywhere near those bolts, just a short spanner, they strip very easily..... I did have an idea to use a stud with nut to hold the housing in place and the other end of the stud would hold the bash plate, this would allow removal of the plate without testing the alloy threads on the housing, so far my best idea................. believe me very easy to stuff the threads.... I can just imagine the apprentice doing them up..

Funny you say that...the bloke was saying when he was attaching the plates, that the Dealerships strip the threads all the time.
I'll probably leave the filter protection cover off anyway most of the time, only putting it on when going to go bush. The thought of removing it just to do a water drain if and when required doesn't appeal much...

Only time I actually undo the water drain is when I'm doing the filters, at 10K changes if I have water in there I'm in trouble big time but drilling a hole in the plate certainly the way to go, you don;t want to be stuffing around with extra work if you need to drain whilst on the road... I would go the stud idea.............. I have an old plate design from my Colorado in the shed, I really should get some studs and see how it fits....... wonder what size the thread is ??? get a stud or long bolt and chop head off, screw it in use a lock nut to hold then fit plate over it and lock down with another nut.... easy peasy and threads are safe... once you cactus the thread thats it really, you shove the bolt in with some liquid steel, doesn't come loose again, or come off, ever...................... another don't ask..

Top idea Drover...shouldn't be all that hard to do either...something I'll look at after the Cape trip.
Same as you I don't consider draining the filters between changes. if there was water in there the warning lamp should glow in the dash anyway.
I'm putting 50mm of Fuel Doctor in at every fill now...dunno if it will help if I do get some water in the fuel, but will never know.
Speaking of fuel...that Z46 recall for the Bosch CP4.2 HPFP, have you heard any more about it? The Chrysler page just reads; "Incomplete but repair parts are not available".
I do wonder if parts will ever be available...just another ticking time bomb I suppose...there is no indication whether any pump will fail at all, it might...it might not...

From memory dealers were told parts wouldn't be available until late-Q1 next year at the very earliest. Given it seemingly applies to all 2014+ diesel GCs globally, I'm not really holding my breath
