Liftgate not working on 2011 KK Cherokee sport
Hi guys
New to the community so forgive me if I haven’t done something right, but please let me know, The problem I have is with the liftgate, when you use the remote it sounds like it’s opening but doesn’t. The lift glass still opens, is there any way to open the liftgate manually? I can’t see any access panels on the inside. I believe the actuator is the problem, I could replace the actuator myself but first I need open it.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, the nearest Jeep dealership is 400klm round trip and when I rang them, they weren’t very helpful.

Hi, welcome. That’s a bit of a bugger, seen this on a different vehicle which was caused by an obstruction, took forever to sort out even with access to the internals. The KK tailgate has a single plastic trim that from memory is purely fixed with clips so simply needs to be pulled off with some gentle prying. That would be easy to do with the tailgate open but stuck closed may be entirely different as the trim in the boot may be obstructing, if so you’ll have a lot of work on your hands moving those out of the way. At which point that drive to the dealer is almost starting to look like the better option. Hope some of this helps?

There is the push button on the outside to open the glass, or the handle you pull towards you to open the whole tailgate. Is that what you mean?

Hi guys
Thanks for your input, yes the trim does go lower than the interior floor level which I suppose is going to create a major hurdle, I was hoping that if I got the panel sort of unattached from the frame I could get a hand down in between and if there was a lever I could release it that way. As I can still open the glass section I was going to use this to access the area I hope. The trouble is that I work a small farm so it’s hard to get time To go to a dealership and them keep the car for 3 or 4 days for them to have a look at it.
I’m not having a go at dealerships but some aren’t very helpful or accomodating.
So if possible I would to fix it myself and use this as a very last resort.

Just checked and there are two screws/bolts at the bottom in the grab handles. The good news is that you don’t need to take the trim off at all. There is a small cover in the lower middle of the trim, open that and you can manually operate the lock with a flathead screw driver.

You know its taken me 5 months to realise you get into the car when it has a flat battery, by using the key, ...in the PASSENGER side. It's 'LHD' chassis! Of course the key is going to be in the LHS door, like the same side the hood open catch is on! I kept wondering how and only ever looked at the drivers side, like Jap cars with keyless entry.
Thats amazing they put a way to open the tailgate if the handle broke! I had to install a pull cord in the Pathfinder myself. I learnt from having a rear engined Lotus where the handle was next to the drivers seat and the cable routinely broke on cars with unlubricated catches, rendering you unable to get to the boot, battery, and engine.

You are all seriously legends, found the little access panel got the trusty screwdriver in there and twisted, and bingo got that little bugger open.
Will have to use it that way until I can a spare part, but that’s more than ok!
I really do appreciate your input, and a big thanks to KKnut for the photos and advice they really were a big help.
