Who wouldn't fit a catch can!
I have been "saving" the oil out of the catch can to get an idea of what hasn't gone through the inlet manifold, this jar is now full after 18,000 kms.
Imagine that muck mixing with hot exhaust gases from the EGR in the manifold.
- R2736P oil filter cartridge next to the jar.

I get 100-120ml every 10K km oil change so it can be a fair bit over time, imagine if you could catch all the oil........... have thought of the vent from catch can going into another can with stainless wool to catch the dregs before it vents to chassis rail then engine gets no oily air... worked well on another rig, driest intake ever.... just finding the room for it...

Great image to reinforce the point, carries similar shock value to a cigarette packet for those who aren't converted yet!

Actually if it wasn't for the soot I wouldn't care really but its the soot thats the real problem I reckon, just the oil is easier to stop.

Looking at that amount of oil collected in just under 20,000 kms, multiply that by say 5 for 100,000 kms and it is little wonder the engine chokes on itself.
When I change the oil filter I give the inside of the junction where the breather hose goes in to the turbo inlet a wipe, and it is quite clean, no oily residue.
Trying to control the soot circulating in the engine is why I change the oil and filter so often...the EGR is the problem of course...or curse.
It can only be making the sooty exhaust worse too as the intake air will be loaded with crud to begin with...loading up the DPF as a result. How this engine would sing without the EGR and DPF to choke it up...

Well I must be in the minority (here). It seems to me that the only people who fit catch cans are “car enthusiasts” who belong to forums like this one. I reckon for every catch can fitted there would be 100s/1000s without one. Neither of my cars have a catch can and over the life of my ownership I don’t think it would make a difference.
