Default Permanent Handbrake Fix?

Hey guys, certainly seen a lot of complaints about handbrakes on JK's before, including mine. (2010 JK Petrol)

Is there a permanent solution, like an aftermarket fix? I've had a mechanic 'tighten it' before and have absolutely no difference.

It literally does nothing if I just pull it straight up like a normal car. I have to click it one at a time slowly and it will then hold 'usually'.

This is stopping me from buying a bigger boat (just have a tinnie now but want one that will sit around 700kg) and I don't want to sell the car.

Has anyone had a permanent solution to their handbrake, can someone fix them properly or is it just a matter of 'it's a Jeep thing' and live with it?

cheers

One problem is the tensioners at the wheels that loosen over time. I don't know of any way to fix that but at least it isn't very difficult to adjust.

The other problem is the slack in the handbrake cable that worsens over time, needing you to pull the handbrake almost vertical before it engages the brake (if even that is enough). I came across a video on Youtube the other day where the guy showed how a spring to "pre-tension" the handbrake cable solved the problem for him.

In the meantime, at least wheel chocks are cheap

hi gents, months now since I fitted a spring to the back of the handbrake lever assembly under the center storage box. Works great, required no tools and the hardest part was pulling the interior apart.

The handbrake cables are kept tight by a clock spring which is part of the handbrake lever assembly. Over time the clock spring gets weak or gets dust in it which causes its effectiveness to slip off (literally).

The spring simply holds the brake cables a bit of tension to help the clock spring along. You can sort of reset the clock spring by holding the button in and reefing up on the lever a few times. You should feel it get a bit tighter.

Pretty sure i put a pic up on here of it about a year ago.

Here is the thread with how it can be, (and was), done by SeaComms and a couple of others. SeaComms did the videos. See posts 19 & 26 in particular.

You Tube is your saviour https://youtu.be/3ag5OO4d_B0 there are several clips by this guy in simple Australian English. If you've been through mud, even if a lifetime ago, the handbrake drum will likely be full of crap. All this stops good function, I got half a bucket of dirt out of mine. Be sure to grease up the adjustment wheel assy thread. Or you could just stay with a smaller boat [emoji56]

Yep, That's the one in post 26 by SeaComms!

Or; that's SeaComms in post 26!

Smaller boat won't help. I just had to go & adjust them again as I was failed on the rego check for a bad handbrake... 30 minute fix to pull the wheels & callipers & adjust it

Elastic will eventually snap I reckon, that's a pretty toasty area of the floorpan.

You don't need a powerful spring. Just enough to give it a helping hand a bit of wire rigging would even out the tension too if you were worried about it. But I am not.
