I've had autos for a while.
I'll help 'em change gear, or more accurately, choose what gear to be in... when appropriate.
At the lights/road works etc, I just sit there with my left big toe on the brake.
Only time I put it into neutral on the road, when stopped, is if it's overheating, or running very hot. Which it hasn't done so, since installing the big mofo cooler.
I have read that it slowly wears it out continuously changing to neutral. Sounds doubtful to me. I change to neutral when sitting at lights that I know take ages. If it is in low range I usually change as the brakes struggle to hold it unless I really put my foot down.
Also in lowrange I change to neutral before I stop as to prevent loading on the box
Never thought of doing that but might try it. It often surprises me who much pressure you need to apply to the brakes to stop the damn thing when in low range.

I had a JK auto and then a petrol XJ and only ever changed into neutral at lights or road works when I knew I would be there for a while. I couldn't really see any point in doing it at any other time and the owners manual didn't really say much either. Each to their own I guess.
Best have a think about what happens in the trans when sitting stationary in drive or neutral.
IIRC in drive the clutch packs for first gear are locked & the slip is being done in the torque converter.
in neutral, fluid pressure is released from the clutch packs & the clutches are slipping. A bit like having your foot on the clutch in a manual.
With the trans in drive heat is being generated in the torque converter.
