UV Oil Dye
Hi Jeepers,
Im currently chasing an a small oil leak on my WH CRD Grand. Ive cleaned everything up so that the engine is dry and oil/residue free. But after a few hundred K's, a few spots of oil appear at the bottom of the bell housing. Could be the rear main seal, but most reckon its from the elephant hose. I just cant quite trace it, as it might be fine misty oil working its way down.
Anyway, there are flouro dyes that you can add to your oil to detect leaks using a black light.
Has anyone had experience with these, and can make any recommendations. Great idea, but some on Ebay/web are very expensive.
Also, while im at it, has anyone tried the Blue Devil rear main seal sealer? Has some great reviews and can swell seals to fix minor weeps on rear main seals.
Before you say its all snake oil, i had a small leak on my XJ a few years ago that made the interior of the car smell of radiator fluid. It was the heat exchanger that had a minor weep. I used K-Seal and it made a permanent seal on whatever was weeping. That was years ago and never had a problem since. Saved me days of pulling the dash apart and repairs/spares/$$.
Cheers,
