I tow my boat 1000kg with car fully loaded with camp gear etc. 3.6 auto stock wheels, gearing and hardly worries it. Just uses sh#t loads more fuel. But I guess that’s still not 1700kg.

I tow a camper with a tare weight of 1750kg with a manual 3.6 petrol on 33's. It tows it surprisingly well although as purplexj said hill starts can be a bit painful, I did have to slip it into low range one time on a steep hill to get going. Airbags do make all the difference too the first trip I did down to Fraser it was sitting on the foam bump stops the whole way but since putting the airbags in it rides beautifully.
You will have to be very careful with the packing though because with a 1700kg camper, a bit of gear, a couple of people and a dog you can be overloaded before you know it.

Be careful with towing above the manufacturer suggested/legally allowed masses, especially the tricksy GCM, for insurance purposes. I have never heard of it being used as the reason to deny a claim but if it causes an incident with a lot of liability costs, then you put the insurance company in a difficult spot - they cannot cover your part of the claim without accepting the liability too.

We towed a 1200kg camper for 3 years with our 3.8L JK, we have since moved to a MUX for our towing purpose and wouldn't tow with the 3.8L JK again we will just swag camp from it when we need to go camping, compared to the MUX the 3.8 JK is crap at towing and it hates hills.

My Caravan is 1300kg unloaded, around 1600kg estimated with gear in it. 3.8 Manual Rubicon on 35s tows it fine, better than I would have anticipated. Depends on your expectations but even with the Caravan it's still faster than a lot of older diesel 4x4s uphill. Rear suspension could do with stiffening though, I'm looking at getting HD rear springs, not really keen on airbags.
