Default vm diesel oil consumption

Just driven a 1,000km from Perth to Carnavon with the caravan.
Car ran perfectly.
Checked the oil and it was down to the minimum mark.
Now i did an oil and filter change just before leaving perth ,put in 7.2 litres but not sure if i checked the actual dip stick level or not.
No oil leaks at all under the engine, coolant all good, engine temps all good.
Ive added about 1 litre to bring it up to max level.
Car is running perfectly !!
Any ideas, is 7.2 litres the fill capacity with a filter ?

Sounds like you might have underfilled it?

Cheers.

Yep, and relying on the dipstick on these things is a joke.

your right about these stupid oil dip sticks.
Got to either leave the engine sit for 15 minutes, even then it drags oil up the tube so its not readable.
Best way seems to draw it up a couple of cm’s , leave it a few seconds then draw it out, you get a sort of a reading!!

Best reading I can get is with engine cold, take the stick out and wipe it, back in and wait a few secs, then whip it out quickly and cleanly. Works probably 7 out of 10 times. Oh, and be sure you're holding your mouth right while you do it, that's the tricky bit...

I've always found,7.7lts, to be the sweet spot when doing oil & filter.
To do a routine oil check, as soon as I shut it down,
Remove the dip stick,
Wipe it,
Re-Insert it 3/4 of the way,
Wait 10-15 mins,
Push it all the way home, leave it there for 5sec and I get an accurate level check each and every time, always on the max mark,

but I have to agree you really only get one shot at it

Pull the dipstick out past the O ring and leave sitting for 15 minutes as oil drains out of the dipstick tube and finds its level, then push in and withdraw. Of course if you pull it out 10 mm and don’t push it back in then add that 10 mm to the reading on the stick. I find doesn’t matter much if hot as oil expands but some is still caught up in the engine to leaving overnight with the dipstick out past the O ring and reading the next morning. My MY13 seems full with 8 Ltrs after an oil and filter change, maybe it’s meant to be 8.4 American quarts which are smaller the imperial quarts but certainly changed for the MY14 on

As the other post said Sh*t it’s only a dipstick
