hi there , ive just bought a golden eagle pretty cheap with 230k on the clock under $7000 it has a full service history by has high kilometers .im fising this as a base for my diesel l build up .

my question is how many cases of oil pump failure have we seen in Australia and what are the main symptoms of opd failiure

If its sqeelling like a barrell of monkeys you have a problem I would say at that high mileage its not likely to occur but thats my opinion. there was something i read on one of the american jeep forums that if the letter "S" appears in the vin number of the jeep as in 05 & 06 models they had an improved OPD fitted not sure how correct that is, maybe someone else could enlighten us?

there is a design flaw with the OPDA's used on the '05-06 models.
basically the upper bearing doesnt get any oil. it relies on grease located within a small cavity and impregnated in the bearing. once that dries up it squeals

there may have been other issues regarding alignment of the opda shaft within the block that could affect the pinion engagement to the cam gear, but most problems seem to be the above

there were also some cams that missed the gear hardening process that may have affected a few and should have been recalled under warranty. those that didn't chewed out the gear very early in their life

mine began to squeal years ago at the 100k mark so I did the "fogmod" which involved drilling a grease port and fitting a grease nipple that I grease with one shot every 10,000 KS

if you let it go it will seize and then bad things will happen

have since clocked up about another 100K and no further problems

Ditto.

I replaced mine when it went with a Dorman unit, no problem since with about 50,000km on the new one. Original went at about 45,000km.
I Fogmodded my old one to have as a spare in case it is ever needed.
