DIY stainless muffler/what to pack with??

Hey everyone, just about to start making my own stainless muffler for my pentastar jku. Doing the whole delete rear muffler to increase storage in the rear so putting a bigger muffler in the centre.

Reasons I'm making my own is well don't have a lot of spare cash, have a fully equipped fabrication shop at my disposal and cause I can.

So I've got a length of 2.5in tube and a box of mandrel bends at the shop ready to go, I've just ordered a piece of perforated tubing but the one thing that I'm a bit stumped on is what to pack the muffler with? Do I go stainless wool or is there better alternatives?

Going to make it as big as I can as I don't want the ricer v6 sound, will be straight thru design so I'm hoping it will be enough to keep it quiet.

Any suggestions would be great

If you're building your own, make it rebuild able , then you can try different types of filling, I 've used fibreglass in bike exhausts, never seemed to last that long, use anti sieze on any stainless fasteners

Hadn't thought of keeping it rebuild able, having said that everything I've read about such items have all been made to repack when the time comes.

What do off the shelf stainless mufflers use for packing? Do they also break down over time?

Most use fiberglass wool. You can get the stuff they use for motorbike mufflers but youll probably need two packets. Regular fibreglass wool doesnt last. S/s wool doesnt quieten it down much but lasts ok as long as its the thick stuff.
Many mufflers dont use packing but rely on resonance chambers and baffles.

There is a reason why no riders actually use bike shop sold muffler packing...

It's snake oil buddy.

Just grab some fibre glass insulation out of your roof. I have ridden bikes for 30 years and no one I know ever buys the packing in the shops.

Make sure you pack it in real tight.

I 1,000,000% guarantee, that tightly correct packed glass fibre roof insulation will last wayyyy longer than loosely packed bought muffler packing. If you can find anyone that can listen and pick the difference between store bought muffler packing and pink batt insulation you have only found someone that has fluked the guess.


Go for pink or yellow glass batts, don't use the white poly insulation.


Edit. Whoops, I didn't read turbomart's post. Sorry man, but store bought packing isn't the way to go IMHO, unless it's much more convenient to get it that way. Then it's fair enough. I hope this doesn't turn into an oil/tyre type argument thread. Lol.
