Jeep Australia sales 2014
We’ve been looking closely at Jeep’s succesful 2014, and what a year it was!
A slew of solid products, new and old, have propelled the company to its greatest number of vehicles sold world wide - 1,017,019 (692,348 of those were in the US). That beats the previous record year, 2013, by 39%.
Worldwide, the breakdown by vehicle was as follows: Grand Cherokee - 279,567, followed by Cherokee - 236,289, Wrangler - 234,579, Compass - 134,629 and Patriot - 122,387. The Renegade, while it officially went on sale in Europe in September and has reportedly been doing well, does not appear in the figures.
In Australia, Jeep has done particularly well, selling 30,408 vehicles (Chrysler sold an additional 17,422). For Jeep that’s an impressive 37% increase year on year, and the company even entered the top ten for the first time ever in September, when the Cherokee was launched. The Grand Cherokee managed to break into the top ten selling vehicles for the first time in May.
The Grand Cherokee continues to be a particularly good seller, with 16,582 sales, giving it 15.4% of the market in its size segment. This compares favourably with its supposedly more popular rivals in the size bracket - the Prado with 16,112 sales and 15% of the market, and the Kluger with 11,484 sales and 10.7% of the market.
For comparison’s sake the Landcruiser sold 9,067 units, and the Patrol 1,859.

It gets worse - I'm fairly sure the ancient Y61 and the 'new' Y62 are included in that single Patrol figure.
I can't see how the Y62 is going to sell at all well in this country. $89,896 for the basic ST-L you get cloth seats, no sat nav (you can't get it on the $101,024 Ti either), no sun roof and pretty rubbish connectivity. For a Japanese luxo-mobile that's a pretty poor showing. You can't get a diesel at any point in the range, which is just nuts considering the way the market is going.
I saw my first one in the flesh recently. It is absolutely enormous, and the looks are... polarising. I can't see the Patrol lasting much longer in Australia once the Y61 stops being produced. A bit of a shame, really - they're just handing the market to Toyota here. It'll be interesting to see if the Wagoneer will be in the same size/capability range.

Nissan has realised it way over priced the y62 on launch. They are discounting tens of thousands of dollars to move them. They are selling very slow. Reason ? The true off roaders want a vehicle to be able to modify and lift. The y62 is very poor in this aspect. The TI with it's hydraulic suspension is near damn impossible to play with and the ST is creating dramas too. Welcome to "Soccer Mum" off roaders.

Patrol is selling for closer to 55k. Have been following some threads on patrol 4x4. Y62 is probably more capable than a grand cherokee and significantly quicker than most.
Y61 is now just a cash cow. All the development and manufacturing infrastructure has well and truly been paid off. Hasn't changed much in 17 years or so.
I am not surprised about the grand cherokee. Good prices. Good diesel engine. Good mix of on road touring comfort and handling dirt roads well. Great all rounder for most people and much cheaper than prado with a better engine.
