Default 2019 Cherokee Trailhawk goes bang

2019 Cherokee Trailhawk with premium package, build date 08/2018. Driven home new from dealer on day of problem. I would like to know if anyone has experienced the following: We wanted to reposition the car without starting the engine.

The car was in neutral and in the run position but the engine was off. As there was no power assist to the brakes, we knew firm pressure would need to be applied to the brake pedal in order to stop the car. The car rolled backwards a few feet (on a gentle slope) and when firm pressure was applied, no braking occurred. When a greater pressure was applied to the brake pedal, a loud bang came from under the car, and then the brakes took hold. It sounded like two metal surfaces shifting suddenly under stress. We have repeated the steps above, but each time the brakes will stop the car with firm pressure and no loud noises or bangs are heard.

We have driven the car since for about 100km, and the brakes work fine. No pulling or noises coming from the brakes. Has this happened to anyone out there or does anyone have an idea what may have caused the bang? Would greatly appreciate any ideas. Thanks in advance.

They did have a recall on the MY19’s due to an issue with brake fluid - but the recall work was supposed to be done before they were sold. Might be worth looking into it to make sure the recall was done - or at least done properly - on yours?

Here’s a link to an article on the issue https://www.caradvice.com.au/680843/...okee-recalled/

Hi lujabe. Thanks for your reply. We did look at the Vin numbers associated with that recall and ours is not one of them. It's build date is also two months after the end recall date. Thanks once again for taking an interest.

Did you open a door when it happened. And when the bang happened did it go into park.

Hello cherokee94nz. No none of those. All that happened was the brakes took hold.

We've checked all recalls associated with this car at both the US recall website and the Australian ACCC recall website and none of them apply.
In addition, the local Jeep service has no clue either. No one there has had or heard of the problem I described.
