Default Diff Issues

Noticed nocking noise in rear of 03 wg with D44 I put it up on the hoist and their is end float in the diff i had the same problem in my XJ when i replaced the D35 with an 8.25 i had that diff re shimed end of problem.Is this a common problem with the D44 and is the end float issue just factory tolerances, or is their another solution? can anyone help the wg has only 94000ks on clock regards

Nope shouldnt be any endfloat & its a d44a totally different from d44.
Has the pinion seal been replaced, cause this can cause these probs if not done properly.

no the pinion has not been replaced any other suggestions regards

Excuse my ignorance but isn't the only difference between a d44a and a d44 is that the "a" stands for aluminium cover?? That was my impression.

Na, thats a folks tale its got nothing to do with it being ally, just a coincidence.
Its actually called 44hd by dana as it uses a d44 crown wheel but d60 pinion.Chrysler call it a 226RBA axle.
Btw, same diff centre is used in dodge viper & jeep srt gc.

No other suggestions, some early WJs had diff issues resulting from insufficient bearing pre-load on carrier (crown wheel) bearings ,but never heard of pinion bearings giving trouble except when incorrectly tensioned.
