Default Roof strips and hatch sagging questions

Hey all,

Looking to paint my roof in the next week. I'll be unbolting the roof racks, but I also want to remove the roof strips which run down the roof. Are they stuck there with tape or have clips or something?

Also, my hatch has sagged on one side, is this adjustable with the hinges or is the problem deeper?

Oh before I forget, what kind of back board will my 1995 xj's headliner be? Cardboard, fibreglass or something else? I want to change the headliner as it's sad looking haha.

Cheers all!

Cant help much with the roof, other than to say check for rust in the rain gutters...a big no-no!

The hatch is adjustable in various ways...examine the upper hinge & pins intimately to see if they are distorted or damaged, then check gaps all round

The headliner biscuit is lightweight fibreglass...it is a mongrel thing to remove, and easily damaged...with the last one, I left the biscuit in place, and glued a new headliner on, (to avoid damaging the biscuit) but it took me longer and was worse than removing the biscuit.

I needed 2.5m of fabric and 1.2L of glue to do the lot, cut carefully

I left my XJ at the upholsterers and they did my roof lining. They also matched up the roof console too. But it cost my $500 a few years back.

I removed the roof gutter strips years ago when i painted my Jeep. I never put them back. Just repair the gutters/paint, and they look good. I use small strips of rubber where the roof rack goes back on.

Cheers,

the roof strips are like a tape you can just peel them off and sand the left over glue

Headliner - I got mine done a few years ago whilst in Sydney. They matched the colour to the original. It looks immaculate.

I also got the same crowd to repair my driver's side vinyl seat trim bordering the cloth which started cracking around the edges. It looks incredible. Should have had them do all the seats.

My question: how do you stick the rubber roof rack strips back on at the top of the roof? Two strips have come loose at the edges.

Thanks for the replies everyone! The Jeep has minimal rust, just surface around the seams on the roof. It's actually pretty good. I will talk to an upholsterer and see what they want to charge, issue is both my cars need doing and may cost a bit to do. My car doesn't have the roof console and I am not sure I wanna put one in to be honest (I have one on the garage bench).

I'll remove the plastic strips and use 3m tape to re-stick them down.

With the adjustment of the tail gate, where do I access the adjustment screws? The 2 little caps on top of the body side of the hinges?

You can use Marine Sikaflex (once dry nothing will remove it) from Bunnings .
A bit hard to work with , sticks to everything and hard to clean . Take your time and try to keep it clean from the start .
