All good here too, no issues to report. Best thing is the level of smoke out the exhaust is almost zero after doing the mod.
I can't say economy is any better, probably about the same.

Same here, no codes, runs fine. I am thinking next in line is the manifold cleaner fluid and installing a provent. No black death either. At 272k I think I must be in the lucky group. (fingers crossed and touch wood and all that)

I did the EGR defeat about 2 months ago and disconnected the EGR completely. I have since done +/_ a 1000 km with no ill effects. The puff of black smoke on quick accelleration has disappeared. The fuel consumption has gone from 9.3 to 8.2 L\100km on the trip computer and the performance has definitely improved.

Great post, but one thing that it doesn't address is the reasons why someone would want to do this mod?
What are the symptoms? Why is the mod done?
I haven't quite come to grips with the answers for this question yet...and it'd be great if someone could explain in a little more detail.

The reason why you do this mod it to remove the negative effects of the exhaust soot the EGR system introduces into the inlet manifold. The major problem is this soot mixes with the crankcase bypass oil and forms a thick gooey black grease which coats the inlet manifold and clogs inlet ports.
If you remember the old Nissan Pootrol 3.0l engine issues, these were EGR related. Essentially some of the inlet ports would get blocked. This would lead to one or two pistons running rich which generates more heat which in turn cases problems, usually a rooted engine.
Other engine such as the MB V6 CRD have swirl motor issues which are created by EGR gunk.
If you Google EGR clogged manifold you'll see a number of negative images that really highlight what a problem it is.

A positive of removing the EGR is the level of smoke released by the engine is reduced to almost nothing. Crazy if you don't do it if you ask me.

My engine billows smoke! And I recently had the manifold inlet pipe off and the inside was covered in black sticky oily mess.
