Default Transfer case o/haul cost

I've finally got some time to go over my XJ. What I thought might have been front diff or wheel bearing noise is most likely coming from the transfer case.
When I first bought the car going from 2WD to 4WD didn't make a difference to the whirring noise coming from under the XJ. More recently when I select 4WD (full-time) when driving along under load the pitch changes compared to no load.
So I dropped the TC oil today and sure enough, it looked metallic in the sun (oil drain container I dropped the oil into was spotlessly clean for this reason - I wanted to be sure what I was looking at was just the TC oil). When I drained off the oil sure enough there were small metal bits remaining in the container. Went for a drive with fresh oil in it and no difference to the noise.

Even though it seems to work well enough, the TC would seem to be on its way out.
Does anyone know who would be good at overhauling the TC in Sydney and roughly what it costs?

The alternative is a used TC, but I've heard that the Classic facelift uses a different TC because of its 16in wheels - does that sound right?
Anyone know of a low-ish kay used TC for sale?

The overhaul kit for the NP242 is about $130US so I'm hoping it won't be that much all up...

I'm getting quotes of about $1000 for labour so far. A bearing and seal kit is about $200 or less landed ex-US, the chain another $50 or so. Call it $350 for parts. That's getting really expensive.

I think I'll get a used TC and try fitting it myself.

Has anyone done this job?

Can't be that hard - I was thinking of making a timber cradle that I could stick on the floor jack to support the TC as I remove/fit it as it'd be heavy to manouvre solo.

It is not hard the upper bolts can be a bit fiddly but with patience pretty easy

I have all the parts at home for my NP242 transfer case rebuild. Got the rebuild kit and chain from Summit Racing.
Lots of YouTube video's on the rebuild. Its not like rebuilding a diff and doesn't require meticulous set up. Just pull it apart and replace all bearings, seals and chain.
I did buy myself a stumpy 14mm ratchet ring spanner to get to the top bolt.
I have not done the job yet, but apparently the transfer case is a lot lighter than the auto transmission, so one person can get it out easily enough and rebuild it on a bench.

Heres a NP241 rebuild which shows you how easy it is.
