NP242 Transfer case noise

Hi, I have asked the same question in the XJ Talk. I hope this is ok.

I bought a 96 XJ a couple of weeks ago and have taken it off road several times since. It drives great. As far as I can tell everything works fine (tranny does all gear changes well).
However, I'm not sure if I just didn't notice it before or if it really is new:

Yesterday, when I drove a track in low range I heard a noise from the transfer case. It sounds like old gear boxes in some gears. The frequence becomes higher with speed.

My question is: Is this a reason to worry? I have checked the oil: It is full and looks good. The Gear leaver rod is also in the right position.
Is it ok to drive it like this? I'm guessing that the chain is starting to show it's wear.
Would be great to get some advice here!
