Default Was keen on buying a TJ until it when "CRUNCH" from 2nd to 3rd...

Hi everyone,

I was test driving an 06 (6 speed) Jeep wrangler which only has 96,000km on the clock and when i would shift it from 2nd to 3rd it would crunch badly when rolling through the bearing. It would never happen if I only changed gears at around 2000 RPM but when it was around 3000-4000RPM it would 90% of the time crunch.

I've had experience with Volkswagons and other cars having failed gearboxes but I am not familiar with the cost of repairing a Jeep wrangler.

The oil was possibly not changed in the gear box ever since it had been getting serviced at a dealership and I know by fact that they don't like touching gearboxes.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Fast changing or slow? I know in the JK the syncro is really slow and i had to adjust my driving style to slow down the gear changes otherwise it crunched through all gears.

He was driving a TJ with the 6 speed.

They are a known problem box, and MUST only have the mopar specific oil used. Id pass on it.
Find another with a smooth shifting box, or go an earlier TJ with the NV 3500 or earlier still AX15 5 speeders.

what Seacomms said is relevant as the NSG 6 speed gearbox in the TJ is also in the JK.

shift slow and without any force for these gearboxes

Thanks for your help!

I think I am going to role with bypassing that vehicle and look for another. It ticked all boxes except for the gearbox issue and also when driving had a whining kind of noise which took away the Jeep experience!

Yep, I would agree with this statement as I have found shifting slowly and without force my 6 speed is super smooth. It just takes a bit getting use to that's all.
