Default Starter motor install

Looks like my starter is coming apart; it's not seen much driving over the past year and found it somewhere along the way had lost one of the two long thin rods that keep the housing (cylinder shaped thing) to the rest. Not sure if I'd be able to source one of those, they look quite specific.

Reading up on starter install; do you need to check if you need shims at all or are most startermotors that are listed for the vehicle plug 'n play?

You mean the solenoid is becoming detached ?

If you have a good auto electrician handy, may be cheaper to have then repair and overhaul it

No I mean the motor housing, sorry for the vague description after my nightshift.
See pic for which rod/bolt I mean (pic just for demo, is not a cherokee starter). I'm missing one of those rods/bolts that run all the way down and screw in the base. So not the screw next to it.

Have an auto electrician near me, not sure if he's good. Quoted me $150-180 once to refurb my alt...

My starter undoubtedly could do with a clean and happy to do that myself. But need either the rod or otherwise a new starter and therefor my questions about the shims.

EBay, 5 year warranty, check your year.
They don't last forever, and a bit hard to push start an Australian XJ.

I dont think there is any shims when I mucked about with XJ starters

If there is, keep them, if not just fit SM

sometimes auto electricians will have things laying about like that long bolt

I think I have a failed SM here even

if not, I would replace it with an Ebay or Rock Auto one
