Old thread but I couldn't find a better one to use.
I rang an auto transmission place today, to see how much to service the 2016 overland diesel 8 speed transmission, quoted $1400, apparently because they said the filter replacement requires a sump replacement.
Seems a bit over the top to me and I will just live with my weird sensations, regarding the transmission.
Anyone ever done this themselves and actually knows what it takes?

Local tranny shop quoted me $650, thats new pan/filter and 8lts of Lifegard oil............. think he said $160 for the filter/pan.

I have done mine myself changed the pan but only half the oil as its too complicated to do a full oil change without a hoist.....
The ZF 8HP70 box has the filter incorporated in the pan so you change the whole pan, there are 2 types of pans available on the market, the pan for the FWDs JGC, Landrovers etc is deeper than the one for the BMW etc......
My plan for this box is change the pan and 4 lts of oil then 20K later drop another 4lts of oil by the time it gets to 100K it has had 2 filter/pans and 12lts of oil thru it, I don't like the idea of 100K for its first tranny service but if near there then its best to go to a shop and get it done fully..

If you do it yourself you need to be able to get the Jeep up about a foot or so to give you room and drill 2 holes thru the cross member so you can get at 2 front pan bolts easier, a T4 torx drive (?) and the usual oil tray, you do have to run the engine once you fill top it back up or you won't get the right level, scary stuff while underneath....

No need to drill. I cut a bit of a torx “Allen key”. Did the job easily.

My fingers aren't as limber now John, I have a small ratchet drive with a Torx bit that fits in nicely but the pinkies sieze up, 2 holes and I have a direct drive access spun off in seconds, really need a grandkid handy to throw undeneath..
