JKU rear head rests - internal rust

Hi all just a quick heads up regarding the read folding head rests in the jku wrangler. They are supposed to fold back when you drop the seats down

Mine haven't worked for a while in the 2011 jku and have beed greased under warranty to get working previously

Any just changed the service center and when they had a proper look the internals are all rusted. Ps no beach driving or anything that would cause it to rust prematurely

They're being replaced under warranty but just a heads up for those with a sticky head rest

just a few photos of the rear passenger seat (stripped back) and the rusted rear head rest internals

this made me question a few things: 1) what would cause this rust in a vehicle that was picked up new in late 2012 and it has not been on the beach or anywhere that would cause this (and we live in adelaide) and 2) the previous service agent (Jeep Dealer) would have seen this and not advised me of the rust

anyway if you have a sticky seat, maybe worth a look and a warranty claim

I would make sure rust is noted as a warranty issue. That way if you have any in the future they won't be able to deny cover even past end of warranty period. It could have been exposed to a very humid environment before delivery. Maybe whilst shipping etc. Is there rust anywhere else?

Re the warranty, good advice & will do.

Re other rust, not that im aware of but didn't think the head rest were rusted. Will do a bit of a check

Fathead I had an issue with mine which was similar but not as bad. The dealer repaired the cable first the replaced the whole mechanism the second time in a month it broke.

High humidity in the cabin would also affect other areas of the jeep but apart from the seat cable and slide there is not much else that can seize. Maybe seat belt mechanism?

Thanks for the input. Will keep looking and will mention it to jeep when i take it in to get fixed. On a side note the silver plastic thing around the gear stick has also fallen off. Another warranty repair. At least its on minor

They get like this due to lack of use. The reason the headrest no longer retracts when the seat is put down is due to the mechanism seizing (as its not regularly used) which causes the cable which pulls on the headrest to make it go down come out of it's mounting point hence slack in cable = not able to pull the headrest.

There is actually nothing wrong with them rusting, all you need to do is strip the foam seat, spray some rust off plus/wd40/lubricant into the headrest area (spray lots) then sit there and use a flat blade screwdriver to keep operating the mechanism which will eventually free it up, then resecure the cable in the holder WITH a cable tie aswell - hey presto.

Use the rear seat mechanism more, you won't have this issue.
