Need to replace broken exhaust manifold bolts, fairly common problem it would seem.
Anyway I was sort of thinking the easiest way to go would be to just remove the heads and pull the exhaust manifolds with them. There is bugger all room to get at the exhaust manifolds. It's either this or remove the entire engine as I see it. Unless your some kind of octopus.
Got as far as taking the intake manifold and the drivers side rocker cover off but buggered if I can work out how to get a socket on to the 2 rear most, exhaust side, head bolts. The brake booster and steering column are kinda in the way.
And even if I could manage to get at them with a flexidrive of some sort and manage to undo them, I really don't like the idea of using anything but a solid drive to torque the bolts back up when it comes to putting the head back on.
Seen plenty of videos of people removing the heads in situ on other cars, Charger/Challengers, etc... but none of anyone working on their Jeep.
Has anyone here managed to do it? If so any tips would be appreciated. Or is it an engine out job?
I assume that this is in relation to the the head bolts??? I've got the manifolds to fix myself and thought it'd be fiddly but not impossible but have yet to try and it's damn tight in there
Yes I was initially concerned that I couldn't get a socket and wrench attached to the head bolts closest to the firewall. Especially on the exhaust side.
I got myself a deep 15mm socket and this worked but I still had to loosen the cover where the steering column goes through the firewall so I could squeeze the wrench into place.
If you could remove the steering column cover altogether it would make life a hell of a lot easier but that would also require removing the brake booster assembly.
Anyway the head is off now. Next I'll pull the passenger side head (yes both of my exhaust manifolds need to done) which I think should be much easier.
