The other thing is rebuilding is very expensive. I was looking at buying Australian supplied bilstein shocks. About $900 for 4. The salesman was promoting they could be rebuilt unlike the USA supplied 5100. I asked how much was a rebuild, he was very reluctant to say, eventually said about $200 to $250 EACH. Simply not worth it unless you need specific valving and have cash to blow.

Bilstein 5100 were under $500 aud for 4 posted to Australia a few months ago.

Remote res is usually a wank. Sure I can drive rough roads quicker but when I am touring I am not in a massive hurry, it's not a race, I will end up breaking something else.

Remote res sometimes have a shorter closed length compared to open and this can be an advantage for some people in specific circumstances.

What is the difference in cost of the arb shocks compared to the USA?

Yes I'd have to agree that many people do overspend on shocks ( and just about every other Jeep Component..... so nothing new here ) for their actual need. Who knows, a bottom of the line shock in a longer length may well suit many applications Its like running around on Muddies when you do a few trips offroad a year..... just personal preference.... or you will occasionally need the improved grip so are prepared to spend the extra.

What isn't so logical is to bag ANY brand on a small sample size, when its seems to have been pretty generally agreed that 'It happens" right across the shock manufacturers.

So by all means if a mid range shock is fine for your application just use it, on the other hand if you need or like remote res that's also cool.... but lets not assume all that differs is the price.

I've only seen the ARB remotes "in the flesh" once on the ARB Head office JK and they were obviously prototypes and not driven on them - will be interesting to see how the market takes to them at their price point. They certainly won't be playing in an empty market sector - especially in the States where I'm guessing their largest market may be.

I guess that I would have to agree that people do get a bit carried away with shocks, their supposed quality and brand name.
The only reason I feel qualified to make that remark is because I have never had to remove a failed shock from any of my 4x4 vehicles in 47 years.
I have only had to replace them as part of a suspension change or modification.
This is a mixture of OEM, aftermarket, cheap and expensive items.
Maybe I have just been very lucky.

No.... i'd say your experience is pretty much normal IMHO, most people fit and forget until they change suspensions, check them or notice odd handling.

For largely road applications ( cars ) thy are frequently "life of the vehicle" fitments but as the worked 4WD has a harder life that does decrease. Modified vehicles with heavier unsprung components and large travels are also factors.

As per rebuilds..... its doesn't seem to be a common requirement, but IF required is possible and still cheaper than a completely new shock of the same capability.

Sort of like replacing the JK with a Great Wall is also cheaper if your not interested in performance. Its not as if a rebuild is some sort of automatic down grade. Personally I'd prefer to maintain a performance shock if the vehicle required it than downgrade if the $ were broadly similar, but it not as quick as chucking the old and bolting on the new.

Walker Evans were $350 a corner so not much diff to support Aussie company. Plus W/E aren't Comp and rebound Adjustable. And don't look as sexy! (the most important part)
