Default 50" lightbar legality in Victoria

G'day guys, just wondering the legal status in Victoria on 50" lightbars mounted above the windshield? I had a bloke tell me the laws been recently changed to outlaw them but I can't find any info saying anything had changed on the vic roads website. Cheers

I read a lot of print and online 4WD mags and I've read nothing about any upcoming changes to light bar rules.

That's not to say there aren't changes coming but if there were, especially if it involved banning them, I would have thought it would have been mentioned somewhere by now other than by 'some bloke'.

I have a smaller one on the top of the front bar on my XJ, last time I was stopped at a RBT, the copper told me that he "could" fine me for having it, and that I need to have it removed ASAP. This was in Queensland.

If it was mounted where it is sitting up within view of the driver, i.e. higher than the bonnet line then that's illegal in every state.

I have a 50" one across my windscreen in NSW and the police have never said a word.

Rules in Victoria are more loose on this one.
You can have at most, 4 driving lights (including light bars).
The generous rule is.. "the lamps must not obstruct the driver’s view of the road".
In saying so, as long as you can't "see" the light itself from your windscreen, that's ok.
So anything above bonnet + below roof is a no.
Roof mounted ones, as long as you don't see the actual light, it's fine.

I thought I knew what was allowed and I agree with the statements above about obscuring vision and protruding in front of a bull/bumper bar but ...
When it comes to the led bar itself then who knows

Another point in the vicroads guideline say is "the light should not cause the driver discomfort" which would be the defining point for its legality. Light bars above the windshield almost always cause some glare. Is it "discomfort"? You might be having that one out with the judge...
