For the love of God - will someone just build one! Cheapest unit I have found for the XJ in the one from Formula Offroad - $1100 for a bar that does not include any other carriers other than the tyre, has no recovery points, no bumper, stuffs up your hard won departure angle and is the perfect height to belt your knee on! Yeah, like that's good value!

Make the bloody thing out of 150x100 RHS and weld a couple of fittings into it and you've got a built in air tank to! If anyone in Sydney is interested, I am trying to build this - but have come to the conclusion that I should stick to design and let someone else do the welding. Broke the handle on my chipping hammer when I threw it across the yard. The dogs ran and hid and the wife suddenly remembered that she had to go to see her Mum. I chain smoked a whole packet and my neibours wanted to complain about the language I was using - but weren't game to stick their heads over the fence. Bar is now sitting in the back corner of the yard, just under a large dent in the fence, slowly rusting. You guys that can just tack these things together are GODS!

Go for it Grant. Just be aware that any fabrication you make for the rear of the FamWag is subject to insurance.
If it fails or is involved in a prang then the bumper/carrier is subject to insurance scrutiny.
Not engineered? No specifactions on the carrier or swing away? No loading specs on the towbar?

Deep shite.....

Not a personel thing at all, believe me. Just a awareness post - thats all.

If you fabricate a "thing" for your vehicle, if it's not engineered then it's a liability for insurance. If you can't certify and plate the carrier/front bar/steps/rock rails/winch plate - and so on then you are on thin ice with insurance.

I draw an attention factor to all items that do not fall under current regs for fitment to vehicles.
It can cost you......
