Default Play in rear axle/hubs

Good morning all,
This has probably been covered before, but my search fuction doesn't work when using my mobile.

I'm changing all my brakes and noticed when doing the rear that I have a little bit of in and out play on the rear hubs.
From looking on other forums I'm getting mixed answers as to whether there should be any play at all. It is only in/out play.
Can anybody here shed some light?
I'm hoping I don't have to change anything else as I've had to wait long enough for the brakes themselves and the front hubs to arrive as there was play in one of them.
Cheers
Joe

My rears have had 1.5 mm end float for the last 6 years.
Bought new bearings and retainer plates 5 years ago.
I'll fit them one day.
Check the front unit bearing height before you go too far , just to make sure.
They changed mid 99.
Height from knuckle mating surface to wheel mounting surface.

This post is pretty definitive.

I'd tend to say if you measure it accurately it might help you to decide what to do. If you are happy to change rear bearings yourself and the current seals are not leaking leave it and get the parts for the shelf.

It's not a big deal to pull an axle out and change the bearings when the seals leak. Order the retaining plates too.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I might just order the parts and get to it when I have a bit more time off.

Cheers
Joe

Nearly 12 months on no problems with the Zero clearance shim, no leaks and much happier there is no end float. I have two theories as to the end float problems. First, American engineering is not as finer tolerance as Japanese engineering, or the small amount of end float over the years pounding back and forth wears the bearing seat.
