XJ Transmission Oil Coolers

Supposed to storm down here tomorrow ... so the weather is as muggy as NQ again.

screw on fittings and a bit oily ??? ... possibly aircon then.

Might be why ya found it where you did ... perhaps a fracture where that ding is in it on the bottom of pic 1 ..... and not holding gas under pressure ???

OIL PUMP VOLUME CHECK
After the new or repaired transmission has been installed, fill to the proper level with Mopart ATF PLUS 3 (Type 7176) automatic transmission fluid. The volume should be checked using the following procedure:

(1) Disconnect the From cooler line at the transmission and place a collecting container under the disconnected line.
CAUTION: With the fluid set at the proper level, fluid collection should not exceed (1) quart or internal damage to the transmission may occur.

(2) Run the engine at curb idle speed , with the shift selector in neutral.

(3) If fluid flow is intermittent or it takes more than 20 seconds to collect one quart of ATF PLUS 3, disconnect the To Cooler line at the transaxle.

(4) Refill the transaxle to proper level and recheck pump volume.

(5) If flow is found to be within acceptable limits, replace the cooler. Then fill transmission to the proper level, using Mopart ATF PLUS 3 (Type 7176)
automatic transmission fluid.

(6) If fluid flow is still found to be inadequate, check the line pressure using the Transaxle Hydraulic Pressure Test procedure.

That to me is definitely air con/refrigeration equipment, I doubt that it would flow very well but you may be ok, flush it first to remove the refrigerant oil and if you can fit it easily enough try it out as there are loads of condensors sitting in wrecking yards of good sizes to be had very cheap.....

Thanks for the replies. I was definately one of those 'I wonder if it will work' things.

So really, I need to flush it, See if it has any leaks, by lowering my air compressor presure do low?, then if no leaks, connect it up, run some trans fluid through it, once full, see if it takes more than 20 seconds to fill a quart of a container. If all that's good, it should be ok.

Besides end fittings, is there any other differences between how radiators, a/c and engine/trans coolers are made. To me, they all seem to have to runs some sort of fluid under differing amounts of pressure?

One other little trick / trap XJKEE ....


Yank quart = 0.946352 litres

Pommy/Oz quart = 1.13652 litres

Just chipping in to add that the coolant component on display is indeed an A/C condenser... the presence of the green coolant/compressor oil confirms this IMHO
