G'day Mate, I am doing this same trip from 7/9 - 14/9. Pretty much the same route except not going through broken hill. I will have to try and post a report before you head off
I am doing it in a fairly standard XJ. Just had a few mechanics go over it to make sure she's all good, got new BFG AT's, UHF, recovery gear and getting a small lift, that will do me.
This will be a good opportunity for Jeep to win my trust as I plan on keeping the XJ and getting a JK in addition to this.
Thanks KJAndy, I had looked at Morris & JBA, and even though we are talking only $230 for the skids shipping alone was expensive(Shipping Based on Weight), and brought them fairly close to inline with Brown Davis.

R8 Tourer, excellent will wait to hear from you.
May be worth talking to Stu (Murchison Products) as he does bring some gear from the US at times in containers. May or may not be worth consideration??? Or Stu may be able to make some ??? I would also keep an eye on the wreckers!!
Wasn't sure when you were going on the trip but I just got back, we kinda change route by going all the way to Cameron Corner and the Strzelecki Desert!!! Wasn't apart of the plan but brilliant touring. We weren't prepared at all for any break downs / issues so thankfully no dramas otherwise could have been an interesting experience. XJ was hell through the corrugations once we got into SA.
As the darling river run, we started in Bourke camped all along the river at some great camp sites and finished in Menindee then up to Cameron Corner. The roads were in top condition mate, you won't have any dramas at all. We had plain uniform fisheries officers that magically appeared everywhere we went, definitely were trying to catch us out.
My biggest regret? No fridge. Esky was a nightmare.

Have fun
Planning a Strzelecki Desert and Corner trip for next easter. Going to tag in the Oodnadatta Track and the Flinders from Adelaide. Would like to hear about issues advice etc.
Most of the roads we were on were pretty fantastic. However we managed to find a couple where the corrugations were hopeless. Easy trip, didnt even need to take it out of 2WD. Haha, and like yourself im similarly looking at adding a fridge. The esky was just a pain.

No issues on my side as mentioned, but there were quite a few corrugations. Make sure your suspension is all sweet and tyre pressures area at a reduced pressure (i did 25). Long ranger tank. Fridge is definitely a must!
I am aiming to have a different vehicle next time i do that sort of driving, super lucky I had no issues with the XJ.

Good stuff mate! Yeah the majority of roads along there are great.
Same here mate, didn't touch 4wd! Where'd you camp for most of the trip, just a long the river?
And yes esky is very painful!!
