Default '96 ZJ Engine randomly cuts out while driving...

Hi,

I'm posting this for a friend.

He has a 96 ZJ/ZG that the engine would just randomly cut out during driving, then not start for a while, then it could be the next day before it starts again.

When it does cut out and he turns the key again, the motor will turn over but it won't fire or even try to fire, but sometimes after an half hour, sometimes it could be the next day, it'll start like it would normally, with no problem at all.

The vehicle has been with a mechanic for 2 months and they couldn't find the cause as it's intermittent (see edit). Anyone know what this might be? Or know where to look?

Any help is appreciated.

** Edit:

My mate just informed me that the mechanics didn't find any codes when they connected their computer and they have checked the crank angle sensor and established it's ok. Also the RAC suggested that the coil doesn't seem to be recieving power... If this is the problem, can it be fixed cheaply or does it have to be taken to a auto electrician for testing/fixing etc?

Sounds like ign coil or ign module, could also be crank angle sensor.
Should throw fault code tho.

I agree with Turbomart, I would start off with going over all connectors and making sure they are in good condition more often than not that can be the cause of intermitent problems. Corroded and dirty contacts can be hard to find and can cost plenty for an Auto Spark to track down, so maybe clean them all up run a test on the coil, if you can't do that then a sparky would be your best bet.
PS: check fuel filter as well, sometimes the simple things cause the most hassle.

If they are using a generic scan tool it won't do. Must use a scan tool for jeeps. Otherwise it won't give them all the information.
